RM Williams Outback Magazine: Road Train

Sometimes we do things just for fun. And these passion projects occasionally attract interest in unsuspecting places.

Meet Bruce Farrington. A man of very few words, he's a road train driver from Northern Australia who travels weekly from Katherine in the NT, to the Kalkaringi and Lajamanu communities. While this overnight trip every Monday has been so common for Bruce over the last four years, it was a completely different experience for Sophie. She spent a week in the NT compiling a personal photo series of outback truckers, but over the course of the shoot her images became more and more about Bruce as she watched a man with such incredible work ethic and immense stamina, get the job done for these incredibly remote and cut-off communities. What she saw was quickly becoming more than just a photo series - his story needed to be shared. So out came the GoPro’s, lights and video cameras and Bruce allowed us to hop in his truck amid the unrelenting heat and follow him around.

RM Williams Outback Magazine purchased the photo series, but after seeing Bruce’s story they bought this short documentary for their social channels as well - something they’d never done before. But it paid off. Within a day, they’d totalled 25k views. What started out as a personal interest piece for Sophie alone, resulted in a paid work series from a major publication.

Photojournalism. It’s a thing. And Sophie’s good at it.
